Recovery Begins Here

Jay McGuire

We develop strategies early in life to ensure our safety. As adults, we often find these strategies are no longer effective and often harmful.

My name is Jay McGuire, and I am here to help. As a survivor of complex trauma and a family history of generational alcohol & substance abuse, I believe individuals can and do recover. My personal journey led me to pursue a career helping others to overcome the baggage of their past. I served first as a volunteer since 1991, and now as a professional advocate for recovery. I earned a master's degree in professional counseling and substance abuse from Carlow University and am now a licensed professional counselor and a certified advanced alcohol and drug counselor with over 10 years' experience.

My experience includes community mental health work as a mobile therapist and a substance abuse specialist for the Allegheny County Community Treatment Team. I served as a forensic liaison for the Allegheny County Mental Health Court. I also worked for Western Psychiatric Hospital as a therapist in the Narcotics Addiction Treatment Program. I provided therapeutic treatment in an array of long-term and short-term psychiatric facilities before converting to private practice.

I can help you.

Don't give up.

Did you know that you have the right to choose a new therapist as many times as it takes to find one that works for you? Many people feel stuck with an ineffective therapist, and that results in feeling like therapy doesn't work. With the help of a trusted therapist you can gain the awareness and skills to cope better, feel better, and do better for yourself. I hope to be that therapist for you.

My experience includes 14+ years of crisis interventions, individualized personal therapy and long-term addiction recovery, so I know it's not easy navigating and balancing all the ups and downs in life. I also believe that you are the expert in your own life. In therapy, your part is to be honest with yourself, open to new ideas, and willing to make changes. My only job is to guide and support you on your journey of self-discovery.

I am skilled in a variety of treatment approaches, and I will help you learn to recognize your symptoms, identify authentic feelings, and apply coping skills that help relieve them. Together, we will determine what works and what doesn't, and develop ways to heal in order to feel better. You are truly the expert on yourself, and partnering with a therapist you can trust can lead you to a higher level of self-awareness and personal growth.

I look forward to a phone consultation with you so we can decide if I'm the therapist that works for you.
